Who Do You Call When a DIY Project Goes Wrong

Termite Damage and Treatment, Moorestown, NJAB-Con of course! There is no such thing as a termite-proof home. But did you know the majority of termite damage is discovered at the time a homeowner prepares to do a weekend renovation, such as replacing some trim or updating the bathroom? Most people don’t know what’s going on inside their walls until they actually open them up and discover the damage.

Termites cause more damage to homes in the United States than tornadoes, fire, and earthquakes combined – over $5 billion annually. They are silent and very difficult to detect. They can eat the wood in your home for years before you ever know you have a problem. Each year, unfortunate homeowners fork out thousands of dollars to repair termite damage. If you plan to make renovations and discover termite damage, it may cost you anywhere between $1,000 and $10,000 to make necessary repairs. Sadly, most homeowners insurance does not cover the repair costs of any damage caused by termites.

We frequently receive calls from frantic homeowners who discover termite damage when they are in the middle of a DIY project in their bathroom. Termites prefer areas with heavy moisture, so the walls around a shower create the perfect conditions for an infestation.

Termites will eat just about anything that contains cellulose. They can start in a post or a joist and then travel to any other wood that is nearby.

The first thing to do if you discover termite damage is to make sure the colony is inactive. There is no sense replacing wood if it is just going to be munched on in a few days or weeks. Once an AB-Con Termite Professional has given you the green light then you can start your repairs.

Structural wood components in a home are the most difficult to repair. Other woods or non-wood components are often attached to the damaged wood. This makes it very hard to remove and replace.

Plumbing pipes and electric wires can interfere with reconstruction. Installing new floor joist(s) often means you have to disconnect the utilities to gain access. Keep in mind that as you remove lumber you need to temporarily support the structure. If you do not know how to do this your project is no longer “do-it-yourself.”
